Hi, I'm Gabbar! I drive a rickshaw in the Chandni Chowk market of Old Delhi! It's my passion to drive visitors to various places throughout the market, to show them the sights and sounds of the neighbourhood, and to help them navigate their purchases safely and securely.
Let me show you around!
Old Delhi (also known as Purani Dilli) is an historical part of Delhi. It was founded in 1639 as a walled city named Shahjahanabad by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emporer at the time. He did this to shift the Mughal capital north from its original site in Agra. It remained the capital of the Mughal empire until 1857. The city boasted beautiful mansions and elegant mosques and gardens (some of which can still be seen). Today it holds prominence as one of the oldest and largest market in India!
Established in the 17th century, The Chandni Chowk is one of the biggest and oldest markets in India. The Chandni Chowk also features a number of historical sites at its periphery. These include the Jama Masjid, Delhi's most famous mosque (built in 1650), Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, a Jain temple established in 1656, and, of course, The Red Fort, established in 1638. All are beautiful buildings the provide a backdrop of history to your visit to the marketplace.
The Chandni Chowk is one of the biggest and oldest markets in India. The market itself features both indoor and open-air shops that offer both variety and authenticity. Besides a wide array of commercial products, shoppers can find truly Indian items such as zari, chikan, statues, wood and metalworking and local handcrafts. Whatever you are looking for can be found in the market!
I've been driving a rickshaw for many years and know the Chandni Chowk area very well. I speak several languages, and can communicate well no matter where you're visiting from. Do you have a larger party? Let me arrange rides for all through my connections with other drivers. We'll take you through the various markets and ensure that you are treated fairly. Then, we'll recommend some of the best places in the city to enjoy authentic Delhi cuisine.
Rickshaws are a fun way to get around the city. They have a number of different designs, but all are colourful, and feature an open-air concept that allow you to enjoy the sights and sounds of the streets around you. Rickshaws are people-powered, meaning the carbon footprint of your journey is minimal. It also means that there is plenty of interaction between you and your driver. Have a question about what you're experiencing? Ask your driver (that's me!). I know the area well, and love to talk about it.
